The Top 10 Things to Do if You've Been Involved in an Auto Accident

There are a lot of things to do if you have been involved in an auto accident
- here are the top ten that we recommend.

1 Stay in your car and immediately call the police (911).

2 Call a family member to let them know your condition, your location and your state of mind.

3 Unless you are satisfied that you have absolutely no injury, ask for an ambulance to be sent to the scene.

4 Gather your thoughts about how the accident happened and begin to formulate your rendition of the happening of the accident from the standpoint of time and space.

5 Unless you are completely clear in your mind as to how the accident happened, do not give the police your rendition until you have had time to consider it.

6 Avoid making statements to anyone such as “I am ok” or “I am not hurt” or any similar statement. If asked your condition, simply state “I don’t know. I would like to be examined by my doctor.”

7 Ask the investigating officer to make a drawing of the accident so that you can have it for easy reference in the future.

8 Ask the investigating officer to take pictures of the accident scene so that you can have those for future reference.

9 Provide the investigating officer with you driver’s license and your insurance information and make sure that the officer agrees to provide you with that same information from any other drivers involved in, or witness to, the accident.

10 Go to the hospital or emergency room in the ambulance. Allow your family to make arrangements to pick up the car.
